Are there any indoor swimming pools in or near Great Neck, NY?

August 3, 2011 - 10:14 am 1 Comment

It would be nice if it were at a gym but if not that’s okay. I’m trying to find a decent sized one (not like the one at Health & Racquet Club by Waldbaum’s). Okay if in Queens as long as it’s close by.

The Great Neck Park District has a big indoor pool,

"Parkwood Sports Complex is composed of an indoor tennis center, an ice skating rink and a pool. Parkwood Pool [65 Arrandale Ave., 487-2975] has an Olympic-size swimming pool, an intermediate and a kiddy pool. There is a summer recreation program, dining area, snack bar, dressing cubicles, restrooms, showers and lockers. All are accessible to the handicapped. The pool is normally open in the summer months from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. to all residents who pay a membership fee. Parking is available."

Two handed backhand: racquet face question?

March 22, 2011 - 12:47 pm 4 Comments

In the forward swing: at the lowest point of the swing, should the racquet face be parallel to the ground then open up as you swing forward, or should it remain relatively vertical throughout the whole forward swing? I’ve been watching pros, and most seem to hit it the latter way (racquet face remaining more or less vertical in the whole swing). But I also see a few like Nadal who, at the lowest point, have it parallel to the ground (which is similar to a one handed forehand).

Which is a better/easier way to play for a club player? I’ve tried to imitate the "Nadal way", but lost both power and accuracy with that way. Why can’t I do it with the two handed backhand like I do with the forehand?
I understand at contact point the racquet face must be roughly vertical. But what I ask is before that: I ask about the racquet face when it’s at its lowermost point of the forward swing.

Nadal is nearly vertical through out his whole swing…

I’ll try to explain you the psychological phenomenon which makes it extremely difficult to reproduce something as complex as a tennis stroke by its sole sight. They are few manners in which human beings learn and of them is a form of socialized and cognitive behavioural conditioning – or, in simple terms, the learning of behaviours corresponding to certain external stimulating elements in accordance to some complex mental processes and in social circumstances. It sounds very complicated, but the basis of it is only the "reproduction by model."

You must observe a behaviour, gesture or reaction from a model – some which catches your interest. For this to work, you need attention, retention, reproduction and motivation. Our trouble is situated in the first one: attention. The thing is that you can’t get all information from all places and all at once: your attention must be caught and regards only a limited amount of specific assets. For instance, there’s a video on youtube which shows two basketball teams making passes randomly and asking you to count… the thing is that a guy wearing an ape suit start dancing while you count and since apes are black, he doesn’t stand out from the black team (wearing black shirts and shorts). The thing is that out of 30 persons in my psychology class, no one has seen the ape exception made of those who knew he was there beforehand. So, if your focus is efficient, you’re not likely to be bothered by anything but what it concerns – if you start looking around, in the case of the video, you loose count of the passes…

What I am pointing you is that your model – the professional player in a video – is performing a very complex movement and you aren’t likely to copy it on the first try. If you watch him play, you’ll miss many things; and that’s the risk! If you try to copy a player, you are more than likely going to copy what YOU see of him and not the actual reality. This results in exaggeration of certain parts of the movement because of the uneven importance you give to all the components of the movement you try to copy. In your case, you got under an impression, but the video you might have saw is situational: normal backhands aren’t played parallel to the ground – they are all nearer that than vertical, but thinking this way will lead to the mistake I explain: you will exaggerate it.

AND JUST TO MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND IT:
The racket face is perpendicular to the ground upon contact; don’t be fooled by the impression the very fast contact leaves… your face close AFTER impact – it not, you send the ball into the net. Why? Because your horizontal drive will always be by far greater than your vertical drive. What does it mean? Well, if you studied vectors and physics, you understand that a ball hitting something at an angle won’t bounce straight back; it will see the energy being split between a vertical and an horizontal component. In all your attempts to make it right, you’ll never get a ball, struck net level or lower, above this net if your racket face is not at least perpendicular to the ground because the vertical component (downward) of a closed face will be much greater than the upward acceleration the ball will gain and there are two reasons for that:
-a part of this upward action is put into topspin;
-the whole upward movement has a lesser amplitude than that of the horizontal movement.

Public tennis teams in Nashville?

January 12, 2011 - 10:44 pm 1 Comment

Hi-
I just moved to the area and was wondering if there are any teams based out of public parks/rec centers that form USTA teams for league competitions? I’m interested in Fall Combo league as well as playing singles for someone next spring. I’m a 3.5/4.0 player not looking to join a country club or racquet club due to monthly fees. Any advice/suggestions is much appreciated!

i’m not sure. check on the internet tho

What is the difference between the Babolat Pure Drive and the Babolat Pure Drive 135th Anniversary Racquet?

July 3, 2010 - 8:39 pm 2 Comments

I demo’ed the Babolat Pure Drive at a tennis club and really liked it, and i noticed that there was a 135th Anniversary Edition of the Pure Drive. i didn’t test out the 135 racquet, but it comes in red versus blue and i really like the red. I’d like to get the red one if there is no difference between the two but there isn’t one to demo.

They’re exactly the same. Only difference is the paint job. So if you like the red better, by all means, go for it. Tennis Warehouse doesn’t even have demos of the anniversary edition, because it would be pointless since they already have demos of the blue version.
