Does a lifetime membership contract with a health club have to be in writing?

It is always smart to get contracts in writing. This question concerns the legal enforceability of a contract if the parties choose not to place it in writing. Would it be enforceable if the parties did not put it in writing?
49 out of 50 states use the Uniform Commercial Code, which covers contract law. If you have nothing in writing then you are pretty much screwed as it boils down to you saying one thing and the other guy saying another. Your word against his. Not enforceable.
Get all contracts in writing, always.
