Historically "mascots" were used to bring luck to the team. Today this tradition continues, but mascots are now chosen more for showing the team spirit i.e. "Fighting Irish"…etc.etc.
The mascots are always related to the local traditions, nationality and customs of where a team is located. Like the Seattle Seahawks. Pacific Northwest Indian tribes from the Seattle area carved many Totem Poles with tribal images of Hawks. The Team chose that mascot for luck and tradition and for the spirit of speed, grace and accuracy.
