New York Athletic Club
Private club at Central Park South and 6th Avenue, formed in 1868 by William B. Curtis, Henry E. Buermeyer, and John C. Babcock in the backroom of the Knickerbocker Cottage on 6th Avenue between 27th and 28th streets. On 11 November 1868 the club sponsored the New York Athletic games, the first indoor amateur athletic meet in the United States, in the unfurnished Empire Skating Rink on 3rd Avenue. On a cold, rainy night the meet drew more than a thousand spectators, who saw six track and eight field events; among the innovations introduced at the meet were cleated athletic shoes and an early bicycle with a large front wheel called a velocipede. The club built a boathouse on the Harlem River in 1870, opened a club at Mott Haven in June 1874, and in 1880 purchased an island of 30 acres (twelve hectares) in Long Island Sound as a training retreat for its elite competitors. Called Sheffields Island (later renamed Travers island for the clubs president William R. Travers), the island had two buildings in which as many as seventy athletes could live and train while carrying on business in New York City. By 1898 the club had many prominent businessmen in the city as members. The clubs building on Central Park South, opened with great fanfare on 22 January 1929, houses extensive athletic facilities, restaurants, and guest rooms.

Chan:
Traditional wrestling gyms in India are facing tough times. More and more young men prefer to pump iron rather than wrestle each other to the ground in loin cloths. Here’s more on this growing trend.
It’s a routine that could very well disappear. The morning walk to the gym.. and then to the mats.
Traditional wrestling gyms in India are facing a recruitment problem, as many young men are pumping iron in western-style fitness centers.
As Indian cities modernize at break-neck speed to keep pace with people’s changing habits – physical fitness centers are on their way out.
Om Prakash – an old school wrestler says young people are looking for different things.
[Om Prakash, Traditional Wrestler]:
“Youngsters nowadays have switched to modern gyms and are growing weaker. They only drink tea and water, and not almond milk and yogurt. As a result they have well-toned bodies. They wear trendy clothes and walkabout in the market. But are weak.”
Many urban Indian men are keen to look like their favorite Bollywood stars. And that means bulking up as well.

I received a call from Scott Goodpaster, the Director of Cincinnati Functional Fitness, to produce a Video of him training one of the most inspiring young men. His name is Dustin Carter. Dustin is a Hillsboro High School Wrestler that has no legs or arms, yet he often wins wrestling tournaments and amazes people through his life. I want to thank Scott for giving my company, Landman Productions the honor of producing a video which will hopefully touch other people’s lives when they view this. I know that Scott and Dustin have touched my life, that’s for sure!
